A few days ago this video popped up in my recommended feed… And I was reminded of what it is that draws me to Hospital Playlist and why it is that the slice-of-life genre has so much appeal with international audiences. The genre with its snapshot approach is well-suited to the health care context here in order to achieve a high level of realism. It also acts as a contrast to the makjang — soap opera on steroids — which is often a single trope-infested narrative made up of a series of highly dramatic contrivances calculated to be emotionally charged and leave the audience coming back for more. A slice-of-life assumes there is drama to be found in everyday events and interactions. Drama is about perspective and interpretation. An event is imbued with importance by the people who witness it and a narrative is created to make sense of the event. Take for instance, Yeon-u’s mother from the previous episode. To a nurse she may be a potential lawsuit, to another she might be a bit of a handful. They each have their own interpretation of what she represents to them and the hospital. But to Gyeo-ul she is a woman who has something to say. In this situation it is up to Ahn Jeong-won to set the story straight with an interpretation that fits all the facts.
Perfect read while taking a short break from working! Being a wintergarden supporter as well, I was initially disappointed with the lack of couple scenes. However, I was reminded through this scene that this show isn't just about the romance, it's also about friendship and the daily lives of the other characters. My initial disappointment turned to warm fuzzies thinking how amazing it is to have a close group of friends whom (or is it who? Hahah) you can safely confide in and have them be genuinely happy for you or just being there with you. The other scene where Ikjun and Seokhyung were seated side by side in the garden after a difficult day at work... I felt that too.
I've been waiting for more analysis from you for the episode 2. Thank you for this!
While reading this entry, I realized that one of the shots (long shot with Jeong-won facing the camera and his friends are around him) makes us feel like we're the 6th friend that he is sharing the news to. We're the 6th friend seated in front of Jeong-won in that scene.
This supports your insight that we're just like Song-hwa and Ik-Jun who have seen and observed Gyeo-ul and JW, and we're just as happy as them.
Like you, I'm also glad that Seok-Hyeong closed the door on Sinhye. I'm rooting for Min-Ha, too, as she is able to slowly peel the layers of Seok-Hyeong. It's slow like a slug but she is able to do it. Min-Ha is able to connect to Seok-Hyeong not just as a doctor/colleague but also as a human being.
Seok-Hyeong has come a long way from Season 1's early episodes when he made an excuse that he has to check an MRI result (leaving Min-Ha, Gyeo-ul and other staff) to being able to have noodles with Min-Ha. That's character development.
I still think about Ik-Jun losing his patience to the liver recipient. That gave Ik-Jun more character depth.
Let me also add that Jeongwon said that among various reason, Gyeoul is the biggest reason why he stayed (not one of biggest reasons, Netflix's translation lost the meaning entirely), which speaks volumes of just how much he loves and treasures Gyeoul.
I love how they dont make the romance central to the drama. There isn't a need to. Life is a myriad of things. If romance happen to be a part of your life, good on you! But if it isn't it's not the end of the world. There is so much to each life, isn't it?
But, going back to the point about Ikjun being there from the start of Winter Garden, that is why he is the permanent president of the Winter Garden nation. He helped these 2 babies the whole way, from the famous 'she's not my cup of tea' to 'God will understand' :) he looked like a proud father in that scene when Jeongwon broke the dating news!
This article was like a nice cup of tea after a long tiring day :) thank you 🌹

Thank you for this. I haven't watched this drama yet.
