Short C Dramas: Recommendations 17 October 2025
In no particular order… (Click on the hyperlinks to access the dramas)
University student Wen Mi has a foreboding dream that sees her confessing to a young man she has pursued for two years. The lad in question couldn’t care less and is the epitome of “sullen”. It’s hard to believe that the female lead would be interested in such a grumpy and indifferent fellow. There aren’t any good looks to speak of. A car heads in their direction and she’s pushed out of harm’s way by childhood friend, He Jue, who is in love with her. He’s a casualty of the moment and she wakes up from the nightmare determined to change her entire trajectory and end her infatuation with the lad who doesn’t care. With all her problems, she has a medical condition pertaining to her tear ducts. It’s also part regret drama like a lot of C drama love triangles and unlike (far too) many this one doesn’t focus overmuch on the guy who misses his chance with the female lead. The romance is sweet and it’s a worthwhile watch if you like the idea of the archetypal nice supportive second male lead getting the girl. Find it here. There are other hugely popular versions of this “she had a bad dream” storyline that feature a motorcycle riding male lead.
Popular short drama actress Zhang Jinyi plays a highly accomplished assassin who transmigrates into the body of a frail duchess Jiang Yunxi after being instrumental in the third prince of Nanzhao taking residence of the eastern palace. Her reward for all her efforts — execution — because the dead tell no tales. In her new identity she catches the eye of the ruthless Prince Regent, Xiao Jinyi, and factors him into her revenge scheme. He’s both suspicious and curious about her motives but is undeniably drawn to the contradictions in her personality. The actor is attractive except for a horrible case of wig malfunction. Yunxi plays him like a fiddle as she embroils himself in the struggle for the throne. He falls for her winning ways soon enough. Despite her agenda and reservations, it doesn’t take long before she’s moved by his advances. The cat and mouse is fun and the drama can be watched here. On the downside, the last 15 minutes is rather messy and the wrap up feels rushed. But they get their happily-ever-after.
Taekwondo instructor, Wen Xi, is waiting to register marriage with her longtime boyfriend who is a no show because of an inconvenient pregnancy. Outside is a chain-smoking groom to be waiting for his bride-to-be to arrive. Another no show. Desperate to cast off the past, she is hit with the brainwave of flash marrying the handsome stranger. He, on the other hand, doesn’t mind who he ties the knot with as long as it placates his nagging family anxious for the bloodline to continue. Our female lead comes with the baggage of a horrible father and step-mother who are adamant in making life a living nightmare one way or another. Predictably, the new contract husband turns out to be a wealthy CEO and the two have to learn to navigate past grievances and differences in economic status. They go from flash marriage convenience to contract marriage and finally… true love… after a series of misadventures.
In an instance of the powerful throwing their weight around and causing a miscarriage of justice, a seemingly ordinary young woman is rescued by a mysterious figure known as the Immortal Doctor, Yu Fuyun. She’s lucky apparently because he’s been experimenting with a particular remedy and she happens to be the perfect guinea pig. Desperate and homeless, Song Yao boldly seeks his help to enter the political fray in order to avenge her father. Her strategy is to become the consort of the fourth prince, Xiao Sichen, the nation’s hero and god of war. Clearly the road before her is not an easy one with innumerable obstacles awaiting her.
Unbeknownst to her, her masked physician benefactor is the Xiao Sichen. Immediately Xiao Sichen’s suspicions are aroused and questions Song Yao’s motivations. But he is secretly impressed by her determination to help a woman in labour that has unceremoniously collapsed at their doorstep. There’s also an amnesia angle to all of this which soon becomes evident when the leads interact over time. Xiao Sichen has other problems of his own. The empress’ niece is keen on him and the empress wants to set them up. Joining the cat fight is Liu Yunning, a seemingly frail young woman he picked up during his travels. With delusions born of prolonged contact she too has an eye on being the mistress of Xiao Sichen’s household.
No wonder it all adds up to a five hour drama which is long for a short drama. But it is well-made and the storytelling compelling. Honestly the five hours goes by quickly as there are things happening all the time. The drama can be found here.
I’m not exactly familiar with Caesar Wu but apparently this recent adaptation of Prisoner of Beauty is his first venture into short dramas. I didn’t mind Prisoner of Beauty with Liu Yuning and Song Zu’er but didn’t exactly have great love for it. This new version with a rebirth premise does Wei Shao aka Zhonglin better than the other one to my mind. It makes the desperation a lot more palpable. Furthermore it’s stripped down to the bare essentials of the plot. Zhonglin is brimming with more paranoia and resentment. He’s perpetually lurching from one crisis to another on a short fuse. The cycle of mistrust and misunderstanding doesn’t get resolved readily in this very low trust enviroment. Plus there’s no ridiculous year long mourning period. It’s deliberately darker. As a whole the drama scores bonus points from yours truly for not having misplaced comic relief and keeps to the tone. Qiao Man in this is also far more manipulative and is not above using her feminine wiles to get what she wants. Which is in large part why the lack of trust gets protracted. Moreover she doesn’t always make the best choices to allay his fears due to the fact that she’s already lived through the narrative once before. On the downside I’m not a particularly enamoured with the actor that plays the cousin after Liu Duanduan’s performance. It’s worth a look if you’re fascinated by the idea of a bleaker, “more adult” version of Prisoner of Beauty.
Final one on this list is a revenge-escape plot. After being orphaned female lead (Liao Huimin) has been “living” with El Creepo uncle and his ghastly family for 10 years. Creep uncle is obsessed with her because of her striking resemblance to her late mother and keeps her imprisoned in the manor. One night she has an encounter of the intimate kind with the Ghost-faced General, Xie Weilan and uses him as her antidote. Later on the pair get cozy and she seduces him with the promise of matrimony in order to escape her relatives from hell with a single-minded purpose of destroying them entirely. I like this one mainly for the cocky and hopelessly devoted general (Chang Bin) and the nicely written romance. The revenge story is pretty much by-the-numbers.
There are several versions of this story but I seem to enjoy this one the most.

Thanks for the recommendations! Here's a modern version of the revenge-escape plot and it's goooood (and steamy!). The two main leads have explosive chemistry.

Thanks for these. I made myself a Youtube playlist for these dramas. I had watched the whole long-form Prisoner of Beauty so I'm excited to watch this new version.
